Can a Robot Interview Better than Humans?

What is this world coming to!  I have seen many changes since I started Patrice & Associates without an internet.  Our big innovation was fax machines!  You may have seen this video on the internet.

Think about the last time you interviewed a candidate. What was your first initial reaction to them? Before they even opened their mouth?

It was probably something like this:

  • “They are decent looking enough”
  • “Shorter than I thought, but skinny”
  • “That hair could use a trim”
  • “Smells good”
  • “Dress choice was on point, very flattering”
  • “Nice smile, probably could whiten those teeth a bit”
  • “Love the shoes!”

That was done in the first ten seconds, then you shook their hand and it was damp because they were nervous and you were disgusted and in that moment you pretty much made the decision to not hire them.

WELCOME TO THE REALITY OF HOW HUMANS INTERVIEW.

Now we love to believe that a robot will not have any bias, but we do know that with machine learning robots can and will learn bias if left unchecked.

What robots will not do is judge us on all this superficial stuff! They will judge us on the quality of our answers, our intelligence, our word choice, the time it takes us to respond as compared to others answering the same question, our facial expressions at every single moment, our inflection in our voice when we might be exaggerating, etc.

Humans love to interview based on feel.

We lie and say we don’t. We do behavioral interview training and say we are looking at past performance all the while thinking in our mind as they are speaking, “will her personality work with the team, she might come off too strong, ugh, I don’t want the team fighting with the new person, I do need a strong female on my team, though, her hair is really great, plus she went to State and I love State, and she mentioned she likes dogs, I like dogs…” Oh, yes, great answer to that technical question I just asked.

A ROBOT WOULD NOT CARE ABOUT FIT.

That’s hard for humans because we know fit matters. We also know that fit inherently causes our worst biases to come out.

We won’t ever come out and say the reason we aren’t picking you is because I didn’t like how used slang and sounded ghetto in that one answer. That would be biased. We will tell you that your experience was good, but we found someone else who had ‘better experience’.

A robot interviewing will move forward the best candidates based on data and criteria set. It will then be up to you to throw the bias somewhere into the process to screw up the robot’s selection!

What do you think? Can or will a robot interview better than a human?

What Clients Say About Patrice & Associates

  • I am very pleased and happy to have worked with Leah.

Leah was very prompt and knowledgeable about the company she was recruiting for. She represented World Wrapps as if she were the owner and knew exactly what they needed in a candidate. Leah prepared me for my interview with Matt & Martin which helped me to be successful and secure the GM role. The biggest factor for my success was how Leah tailored a resume which highlighted my accomplishments and showcased my abilities. She made me look like a superstar! I am very blessed to have been found by Leah and brought me to my new career!

  • My experience with Patrice and Associates could not have been more positive and professional. I had the pleasure of working directly with Mr. John Mathew, who did a tremendous job in helping me advance in my career and life. John thought outside the box and discussed with me various potential paths and opportunities related to my experience, my strengths and talents. Throughout the whole process, I felt confident that John truly cared and had my best interests at heart. In the end, despite the global pandemic and all the other challenges related to it, Patrice and Associates delivered and paired me up with a wonderful company, for which I am grateful. Thanks, Lukas V. I had the pleasure of working directly with Mr. John Mathew

  • I can’t thank you enough for everything you did for me and for being so upfront and friendly.

If you are looking for a dedicated and passionate person and company there are not enough good things I can say about “Tim Kieth” and Patrice and associates.  Tim recently helped me find a job at a restaurant I had never heard of and was skeptical at first about. Except Tim constantly has a positive attitude and a caring persona about him. He talked me through every step of the way through all the interviews and made me feel confident about myself and my abilities. During the interview process the day before my second interview, I came down with Covid-19 and called Tim immediately and he rearranged everything for me to continue with getting this interview. You don’t find many people in this world that do their jobs with such passion and integrity and Tim is definitely one of them. I did get the job and am loving it. If I did decide to ever leave this company I would only use Tim Kieth for another job but he has helped me find my forever job. I can’t thank you enough for everything you did for me and for being so upfront and friendly. Thank you, Andrew Marsh I can’t thank you enough for everything you did for me and for being so upfront and friendly.
